How it works

Looking for an environmentally responsible way to recycle your aerosol cans? RED Industries offers a fully sealed, explosion-safe system that is ATEX approved and CE standards compliant. Our automated processing unit, located at our Sneyd Hill Transfer and Treatment Centre in the UK, safely removes, and collects all waste contents, captures, and contains gaseous and liquid components, and bales the empty metal containers for 100% recycling, including the recovery and reuse of plastic components.

Our processing unit can handle empty, part-full, and full aerosol cans, such as paints, lubricating oils, hair sprays, and deodorants, at a rate of approximately 2 cubic meters per hour. This innovative system provides a zero-waste-to-landfill solution, with all collected steel and aluminium metal briquettes sent for recycling to create new metal products, including aerosol cans and other industry components.

At RED Industries, we are committed to minimising waste and maximising sustainability through our aerosol recycling program. Our team is constantly exploring ways to improve recovery methods by separating liquids collected during the recovery process to facilitate reuse of individual components, reducing the need for primary sourced oil-based raw materials. We are also actively pursuing options to use the aerosol propellant gas produced to provide energy and heat for on-site processes and supply excess electricity to local businesses.

Why do we need to recycle Aerosols?

Aerosols are a ubiquitous household and industrial product, with an estimated 1.4 billion aerosols produced annually in the UK.Unfortunately, the UK's capacity for specialised aerosol recycling is limited, leading to inappropriate disposal and uncontrolled releases of potentially harmful materials. Additionally, this results in significant loss of recyclable and recoverable materials.

RED Industries is committed to protecting the environment and providing sustainable waste management solutions. Our cutting-edge aerosol recycling plant reduces waste to landfill and offers a 100% materials recycling and waste-to-energy solution in a closed-loop system, ensuring the safe and compliant recycling of aerosol waste. Frequently Asked Questions

Why have we invested in this technology?

RED Industries Limited has for some time been interested in investing in niche technology to support further growth at our Sneyd Hill facility and has spent time researching the best available options.

Aerosol de-packaging is a tried and tested process used across the world, and we will be using the latest, safest and greenest technology on the market. Each component part has been carefully selected and tested to comply with strict standards of safety. The processing unit has been tested during manufacture to ensure that critical safety features are present and functioning correctly.

The machine will be tested again once installed and the operation of all safety features will be observed by an external safety consultant. The manufacturer of the processing unit will provide full and comprehensive training to Red Industries personnel prior to use. There are various interlocks that prevent unauthorised use and access of the equipment. The processing unit is ATEX rated meaning that it has been tested and certified for use in areas containing flammable gases and liquids.

The unit is CE marked. Fully qualified consulting engineers have conducted a HAZOP study and DSEAR Assessment. A HAZOP study involves the thorough interrogation and investigation of the proposed design and operation of the equipment and makes recommendations which are incorporated into the final design and build to ensure risk is minimised at all times. A DSEAR assessment is the process to ensure that all aspects of safety relating to flammability and explosivity have been considered and addressed to ensure risk is minimised at all times.

How does ‘aerosol de-packaging’ work?

The aerosol recycling unit safely extracts and contains liquids and gases from aerosol cans and then bales the empty cans into metal briquettes. Aerosol de-packaging is a tried and tested process used across the world. Red Industries will be using the latest, safest, and greenest technology on the market. The process is fully automated and only permits use when all safety conditions have been met.

What safety measures does the site have in place?

The Sneyd Hill Transfer and Treatment Centre, Burslem holds a number of industry-leading health and safety certificates, including the internationally recognised ISO45001 award and Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP) approval. Stringent installation, testing and deployment procedures will be conducted by RED personnel and additionally by independent external safety consultants upon the world leading aerosol de-packaging technology.

How many aerosols will this process in a day?

We have the capacity for over 40 full pallet loads of aerosols per day,

Will this run 24 hours a day?

The site has been specifically designed to have the capabilities of running around the clock 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

What components do we recover as part of the process?

Aerosol recycling is a process which takes aerosols and allows recovery of the various components present in an aerosol, including:
- Gas propellant
- Liquid solvent
- Metal container (aluminium or steel bodies)
- Plastic components

How many Aerosol cans are produced in the UK?

Aerosols are widely used in homes and industry, with over 1.4 billion aerosols estimated to be produced in the UK per annum*. The UK capacity for specialist aerosol recycling is small with many aerosols not processed in such a way to protect the environment from uncontrolled releases of potentially harmful materials and the commensurate loss of recyclable and recoverable materials.

What marketplace will we be aiming this service at?

The market has made it aware of under capacity within the UK for the processing of aerosols of varying types. Waste aerosols can arise in bulk from a variety of sources including, for example:
- Some civic amenity sites.
- From commercial and industrial wastes.
- Generated as off-spec wastes from prime producers.
- Those manufacturing and producing personal care products, paints, lubricants, insecticides, speciality foods etc.
- Retail outlets and garages.
- Building maintenance and construction activities.
- Third party waste disposal contractors.
- Facilities management companies.
